Character Spotlight: Norman Bates

Tall, slender, and seemingly normal, your first impression of Norman is that he's a charming but introverted guy, with a boy-next-door personality. However underneath the surface there is more than meets the eye, something dark and disturbing inside him. After his mother died, Norman inherited his mother's house and ran the family motel in Fairvale, California. But unbeknownst to anyone, Norman kept his mother's corpse preserved in the fruit cellar and started to act like her, even talking in her voice and dressing up in her clothes to make the illusion of his mother being alive seem real. Because after all, as Norman states, "A boy's best friend is his mother." Brilliantly played by Anthony Perkins, the character of Bates was partly based on real-life serial killer Ed Gein.
