Character Spotlight: Norma Desmond
A once young and promising silent-film star, Norma Desmond is now an old and forgotten has-been living in an era that has long since passed her by. Residing in a lavish mansion on Sunset Boulevard with her butler and former director Max von Mayerling, Norma dreams of being in pictures again for Paramount Studios under the direction of Cecil B. DeMille. Brilliantly played by Gloria Swanson (who ironically had a similar career slump but which was resurrected by director Billy Wilder), Desmond is an iconic character that despite her eccentric nature is sympathetic. She has since been played by Glenn Close in the Broadway musical production of Sunset Boulevard and spoofed in an hilarious comedy skit by Carol Burnett.
